Why Study Statistics?

Answers to this great question follow from considering a couple of additional good questions.

WHAT IS STATISTICS?
Statistics is the art and science of learning from data. Statistics is concerned with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, as well as the effective communication and presentation of results relying on data. Statistics lies at the heart of the type of quantitative reasoning necessary for research in geography, as well as applying geographic research to real-world settings requiring analytical and decision-making support.

WHY STUDY STATISTICS?
From geosynchronous satellites to grocery checkouts, stream flow gauges, and social network sites like Facebook or LinkedIn, huge volumes of data are being collected in may places and all the time. Knowledge of statistics and statistical applications provides you with the tools and conceptual foundations in quantitative reasoning you need to extract information intelligently from real-world observation.
